We ended up here by chance as we were heading to Southport and spotted the sign, and after visit to there we decided to head over and have a look at what it cost etc.
Now we are not real cave people and only been in a few and only one other while travelling in recent years and that was a different type of cave, the link is here, Chillagoe Cave Visit.
As it was we turned up just as one of the tours started so it was about an hour before next tour headed out, so we decided to have a look. As we noticed a good number of people were taking tours and we were not so interested in the hot pools so we looked about the shop and went back to car and I got the cameras I was going to take into cave, not knowing what to expect I carried three cameras set up for different shots.
It was bloody cold which for us about 6 to 8deg, and we were in a rain forest which is strange, and if you plan to visit you will need to know there is 6 km. of dirt road to the office and shop and once you get your ticket there is a further dirt raod drive to the cave meeting area and as it was raining as well as cold, the road was a little bumpy for standard car and you will get your car very muddy and dirty.

A you walk out the 5min. walk to cave entrance, it is freezing and your brain for us Queenslanders it was so wrong to be so clod in an rain forest, but the trees are covered in fungus and the tree ferns are huge.
So the tour we had was some 15 odd people and I tried to be at back so to give me more time in taking photos, but had this one person who was like a shadow and was following or just in front, you may see his head in bottom of some of my shots. I am tall and this body was much shorter so you will see just the top of the head, which is funny in a way.
Now I have split the photos into two sections as I needed to get an idea of light etc. as we moved in cave, the cave was on different levels so you went in to the back of cave and then up to other levels to dead ends then back out past thinks you had seen, so I took photos going in based around the lights in the cave and they are low and there are no coloured lights and with others flashes going off added some colours, So this first section is as most would have taken photos including some with the IPhone and yes it was colder in here.
Now changing cameras and filters was a fun thing while moving and in near dark as we moved along, but well worth the effort, we were in the cave for 45 min or so and there are some 296 steps going down and in and the same out plus the stairs getting to the entrance for you need to be able to do at that.
The last stairs coming out are up and you do get out of breath and it feels a long way, but its how you went down, but your brain and body is hating you

So about here I changed over to the better camera and started filter changing and you will see a big change in shots as we moved back from some 400mt. in and 40mt down the climb back up and out.
So below you ca see the change in those two shots.
So now you will see the shots as they should be with highlights to different spots, now some of these are by using a large flash or just the camera flash with a colour filter or two filters and some I had to edit to lift the light up to get the better look.

So hope you enjoyed our visit to the caves, well worth the time to go there but remember its a 2hr drive south from Hobart and with so many things to see along the way, best head straight there as tours start every hour at quarter past the hour, so need to be there near an hour before and buy your ticket, have a look at shop maybe a hot coffee and then the drive out to the entrance plus a 10 min walk up to cave entrance
Hope that info helps
