THE VAN SNOBS…..
Now this weeks little story is a strange one in that I have taken note of the times we have been in a van park or spoken to another van owner who are travelling or just people we have come across and I have discovered that there is a thing called caravan snobs and they are out there and been warned some are not nice.
Now believe it or not we have been helping in van parks where people who are in vans who don’t like to be put next to or near trailer campers or older cheaper looking vans.
I have even been speaking to a couple who were in a new van who were happy to chat till they asked which one was ours and I pointed to the Jayco and well they just looked me up and down and had to go as they suddenly found I had a lower class van to them and I looked shook my head and just stood there, and they avoided me till they left the park.
I find it strange that some have this thing about who they are and if theirs is better than your stuff going on after, all does it matter.
I have even offered to help am old bloke hook up his brand new van and F truck, and I could see he was having trouble, to hook up
So I stood there and watched him for 30 min till he finally asked for help I find out the only second time he had done it and because his was new, it was not like other vans and I had to point out that his was the same as most others in how they are towed, it seems that the snobs are alive and well in van parks.
You have seen them as you drive into a caravan park all sitting around a van watching your every move and giving a blow by blow chat on why you are not doing it right and your van is not square to the next one etc.
And when you look up, they all look away and don’t even wave, but you spot the one who does before the others notice him, strange.
Now how many have met the couple who walk past and say hi and start to chat and after a while they start on about their van and how good it is, and what they have done to it, you know the ones, OH yes we have a dishwasher and a large lounge chairs and it is a …(who gives a bugger) van.
With those types, you get out the cheap wine, so they don’t hang about too long and piss off as we are all vanners and what you have or have not got is not the point its what you do and see while in some place.
Look we could have the more fancy van and all the fitting but why we got this van because it suits us and what we saved on getting it goes a long way to help us travel further. Never could understand getting a 100,000 dollar van for using only three weeks maybe a year, when a 40 plus second hand would have done, its all about the status I think.
It's incredible when you get the chance to chat with some van owners, how little they know about their van and I think its great when they ask for help or a question that may help them out and I have found a lot of new people who have just started on the road or are for the first time in their van and really are lost on the simple things and they are easy to spot in the park and I am happy to help out and advise them, and point out how to work out some issues they may have .
But again watch out for the hero vanner who know everything and yet nothing they are the dangerous ones and can rattle off everywhere they have been, but only just driven by at 100 km and of course, have the best van, and it tows at 10lt per a 100, but are overloaded but try to tell them and they will say I need this stuff and that’s it.
I carry a lot of what we need, but I have made an effort to get a van that can take the load and not the standard 300 to 500 kg.
But a little over 800kg, but don’t bring that much and have limited us to what we need and not what we want and boy that’s another issue we will explore one day what people carry, around holidays you see the vans in parks with the full annexe up, extra large fridge lounge and 6 bikes , awning out everywhere TV big screen and chairs for near all the park around their site.
