Today we visited Newcastle for about four hours, yes a short time but we will return next week and have a more of a look but I thought you may be able to get an idea from this few hours why not to just bypass a place with so much to offer in beach's etc.
Yes it is a industrial town with lots of coal loading going on and all the business that is required to run a town of this size, it has started to show signs of it softening up with lots of food places and pubs along the water ways with the ships and tugs moving up and down the river. The new building all the way down the river have taken over from the warehouses that was here many years ago, Hunter street is looking really sad with a lot of building left to fall apart, some are beautiful fronts that could be saved and put new interior to. Maybe one day they will discover the fact that people love to see the history of places and not everyone wants shiny glass hi rise all about.
While in town do visit, the older suburb of The Hill, it has some great old street scapes that will I guess be a movie set for a lot of old time movies and the church on the hill is just beautiful see it here, Christ Church Cathedral.
But don't be put off by the look of the place as you come in off the highway as this place hides some gems in the beach's and history

This is a great swimming spot for kids in the sea but in the pools so safe from the beasties and you know I felt a little concerned taking photos here with the kids and an old bloke and his big camera taking photos.
The beach's are nice and the sand is white and soft to walk on and the life savers are about everywhere
As we were in the older part of town we saw some beautiful old buildings and some are stunning and worth a look at
As we drove about we came across this grand old church and if you click on photo it will take you to more photos of it including the interior
The coast is rugged in places and the views are beautiful the water is so clear and blue and some hidden beach's and the houses are right on the edges plus lots units close to the water.
Below is a number of photos from the fort which sits high up on the point and has a commanding view over the town and is an interesting place to visit
As you can see was windy today so seas are up and the mist is touching everything and I will be adding more to this page over next two days as I get time.
While up on the hill over looking the river the ships coming and going is worth just finding a nice spot and watch how they get in and out in the 30min I watch two ships left with tugs escort and one arrived in port and they are huge and they just drive in and up the river as you would a car.
