After much thought decided we would head south down to the Huon Valley for two reasons, one was to have a look at the Apple growing area and visit before the winter coming rolling in, well it was a cold day and a little overcast.
We are from Queensland and driving on icy roads is a thing we have little practise on and I have only ever been on snowy road and black ice and its no fun, and as you climb over the mountain's heading south there are signs warning you of icy road etc., now there are not too many guard rails and it a long way down off the edge so would be fun.
So if you don't know what Black ice is below is what its all about, no fun as your car just slides off on its own and if you are going at speed no control where you end up.
Among the many threats facing drivers during winter is the most dangerous of them all: Slippery, hard-to-spot and potentially deadly black ice.
"The biggest danger [with black ice] is that you are at the mercy of your vehicle and the ice until your car passes over it,
Black ice forms most often when it's raining and air is at or below 0 degrees at the surface

The beautiful Huon Valley it's just 30 minutes from Hobart. Leaving the city and passing behind the Wellington Range, you'll soon find yourself at Huonville and the start of the Huon Valley where the highway meets the mighty Huon River.
Before Huonville, stop at the Apple Shed Museum, Cider House and Provedore at Grove and discover the traditions behind the once flourishing apple orchards of the region along with contemporary techniques for making organic cider.

So as we drove along we saw lots of Apple trees growing along road side and with the stunning mountain views you are just mind blown with the vista.
Bet you did not know there were so many types of apples and they have them all here for you to look at and I little museum showing how they were packed and sorted and things have changed.
We visited here on our way back from being down further south and had a slice of apple pie and ice cream with a coffee, the place by the look of others around us have some great food and lots of cider to try and see being made, and with the large heater along the ceiling above you its nice to sit and enjoy the place.
As you go along you see these road side stalls selling all types of fruit and vegs and at much cheaper rates then the shops and are so fresh plus the smell of a fresh apple is something you only remember from when you were a kid.

The prices are crazy and some of the signs within the places are so funny and great
The sense of humour, when they picked names for different Apples and fruit is great and you don't see a lot of these is shops, Don't think I ever heard someone say they got a few Fannies when shopping .

Geeveston is a small township nestled in the lower reaches of the scenic Huon Valley. It has a strong apple growing and forestry heritage and today caters for travellers exploring the nearby forests, Hartz Mountains National Park, and Picton and Huon rivers.
Surrounded by rolling hills and the nearby mountains of the Hartz Mountains National Park, Geeveston has a range of shops, eateries and local attractions and a main street full of hand-carved timber sculptures of famous locals.
We stopped here after visiting caves on our way back up towards Hobart and as it was getting into the afternoon really did not spend a lot of time here, back did get out and walk about town and took a few shots of the shops and area

They have tried to get the tourists into town with the theme shops and interesting sites and added features about town,
We got some fresh bread and found the people very friendly as we have found across the island.

Even the local car wreckers has got into the place by painting Murals over some of the junk around the front of the place and it does work taking away that dump look and just adding a bit of colour.
Now the caves we visited is something we did not plan for that and it will take up near 3 hrs of your day, so just letting you know.
Any way I have got a page just for this visit with all the info about the place which if you just go here, Hasting Caves

Well we made it the last town south in Tasmania, now there is not very much to see here but its damn cold and did I say its cold.
Why you ask did we come here well because its the last town and furthest south in Tasmania, mind you its a sleepy fishing village with little about but boats and its cold.
